9 modern wedding gowns that will have you swooning

Spend five minutes shopping for wedding gowns, and you'll know just how many options there are out there: totally infinite. It's super overwhelming. Sequins? Ruffles? Tiers and bustles, lace, silks, crepe de chine? This is why we're always in favour of a pared down dress with timeless, classic design. This doesn't mean, however, that you're stuck with cap sleeves and old-timey look. A minimal, modern wedding gown keeps that sophisticated vibe but invites trendy embellishments that are in keeping with your personality and vibrant new design.  A hallmark of a great modern wedding gown is an interesting, unexpected neckline. We love high necks and boat necks on wedding gowns precisely for this reason: they're not often associated with the luxury that wedding gowns are considered meant to conjure—but they are perhaps the most elegant neckline of all time. For modesty's sake, high necks are perfect—but also for a trendy but timeless take on wedding wear. We love the high neck with no sleeves, or as a reveal for a low, draped back.

A modern, minimal gown still leaves room for flounce. The rule of thumb when selecting a wedding gown in this vein is to choose one statement aspect of your gown and forgo the rest. If you want a flouncy skirt, as in this gorgeous snap from White Mag, keep the rest of the bodice extremely simple. If you want a dazzling low back, opt for simple, thin straps. If you want a beautiful, full skirt, opt for a refined, subtle material. This strategy leaves your gown seeming perfectly put together, without any extra distractions.

Those thin straps. High necklines are gorgeous, but so are delicate spaghetti-style straps that hang over your shoulders and collarbones. What's not to love? This style might require a little extra equipment if you are especially gifted in the bust, but it really looks great on everyone. This allows for a little drapery through the bodice, or a snug fit through the hips—leaving you in a classic silhouette that only emphasizes your beauty.
